課程概述 |
Composition II builds on the foundations of Composition I, which focused on sentence formation and paragraph structure. In Composition II, we will move from paragraph to essay writing. Tall semester of this year-long course focuses on expository writing and explores exposition through the use of compare and contrast, example, process, and classification. The course takes a process approach to writing and students will write and revise four essays for peer review and teacher correction. For the final exam, students will write an additional essay that demonstrates the ability to combine the various modes in a longer expository essay. In the spring semester, the emphasis will shift to argumentation. |

課程目標 |
At the end of the semester, students should expect to
--become familiar with the concept and practice of writing as a process,
--compose essays that are at least 5 paragraphs in length with a clear thesis and strong supporting details,
--edit, revise, and review own and others’ essays with emphasis on meaningful content and logical organization, and
--develop a reflective disposition of own identity as writer, including preferences, strengths, and areas to improve.

課程要求 |
1. Preparation, attendance, and participation are essential for your learning. You are required to come to every class on time, and to print out and bring to class relevant materials for a particular class session.
2. Use of electronic and mobile devices (e.g. laptops, tablet computers, cell phones) is prohibited. Any writing you do in class will be by hand on paper.
3. Take-home assignments should follow the format guidelines below:
--Times New Roman, 12-point font size
--2.54 cm margins on all sides, 1.5-spacing for all everything
--Flush-left (jagged right margin), paragraph indent: 5 spaces
--Chinese name and student ID no. on the top right corner of first page
--Essay number and version on the top left corner of first page (e.g. Essay #2 or Essay #3 revision)
--Stapled on the top-left corner
4. Failure to submit assignments on time will result in deduction of points and eventually a grade of zero for that assignment.
5. We will make use of the university e-learning platform for assignment submission.
6. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is globally recognized as a serious academic offense and will result in your failing the course and receiving disciplinary measures following university regulations.
7. There will be NO make-up opportunities for presentations or the final exam.
